sukigi: these two pieces of wood both protect the vulnerable plastered surface of the upper shelves of the walls of the sunken hearth from damage from the (far harder) flanges of the kettle, and also raise those flanges high enough to admit the small current of air necessary to the continuing burning of the charcoal below.
