futaoki: when the kettle is opened, this small object is used to keep the hot and usually condensation-wetted lid from touching the tatami; once perched on this lid-rest, the lid itself is later used as a base to support the small rectangular strip of hemmed folded, damp linen (termed a chakin) used to purify the tea bowl before tea is made in it, and after the purification has been completed.
