Flowers for a Tea-occasion

Season: June
Flowers for a Tea-occasion
Grand Master Fuden-an Sojitsu

Flowers used: yellow-flowering hochakuso (Disporum sessile Don); wild pinks (Dianthus chinensis L.)
Receptacle: little chrysanthemum' handled basket of woven rattan

Creator: Fuden-an Sojitsu

This receptacle is a basket that is highly suited to the effective grouping of a number of small-scale flowers; it can either be used, as here, placed on the tokonoma floor, or - thanks to the tiny ring with which its rear surface is provided - can alternatively be hung from the central hook with which many tokonoma back-walls are fitted; and is a utensil appropriate for use in small Tea reception-rooms, of floor-plans of four-and-a-half tatami mats, or fewer still .

Once, only white-flowering hochakuso could be obtained, and this has been a flower often used during this month; but, of late, a rarer pale-yellow-flowering variety has also become available. Here I have placed the hochakuso so that its natural curve of stem echoes the line of the handle of the basket; and have used the intense hue of the wild pinks to give the base of the arrangement a point of closure.
