Flowers for a Tea occasion

Season: February

By Grand Master Fuden-an Sojitsu

Flowers used: Akebono Tsubaki, a.k.a. “Akebono” camellia (Camellia japonica “Akebono”),
Hakubai, a.k.a. Japanese apricot (Prunus mune)

Receptacles: Vase of ancient Chinese copper, Grand Sorori, seated on a square tray in black lacquer, called “Haneda-bon”

This flower is requested by the host of tea ceremony in order to hold a memorial service for the Tenjin – Michizane Sugawara - portrayed in the hanging scroll.

The Akebono Tsubaki and Hakubai from my own garden are arranged in the receptacle, equivalent rank to that of Omeibutsu Grand Sorori. This specific fine-featured Sorori is different from other ancient copper vases, such as ones with Shishi (lion) or Ryu (dragon) lobes. To represent and enhance its soft impression, I make the best of its finesse by selecting a plum with foliage which is not strong enough.

The coming of spring is embodied by a single-stem flower and blossom buds, subsequent to be bursted.
